“Maybe… maybe I shouldn’t.”

Tyler didn’t quite look at me as he said it. It had been two long weeks since the meeting with Dad, and Seth had been mostly fine but slightly squirrely in the evenings ever since. It was driving me nuts. I wished he would tell me what was wrong. What the hell had Dad said to him?

The hotel hallway was not where we should have been having this conversation, but Tyler hadn’t invited me into his room. “We’re taking tomorrow off. You said you wanted to go when the movie came out so you wouldn’t accidentally get a spoiler.”

“I know, but that was forever ago. I should stay in and sketch. Your dad wants—”

“You need a break. We’re going to have a meeting with him next Wednesday. You have plenty of time.”

He hung his head, and the suspicions I’ve had solidified. Dad had said something to Tyler when he visited. What the hell was it? Surely he hadn’t bitched at him for not working hard enough? Or about his work?

“You can have every day next week to sit out of the site if you need it.”

He glanced up, his bright blue eyes muddling my thoughts. “You don’t want me on-site?” A hurt little frown sneaked onto his face.

“I need you, but I can make do.”

His eyes bugged, and then he laughed and totally shocked me by stepping out of his open doorway to hug me. I wallowed in it. It had been a while since he touched me. An anxious happiness razor-bladed down my spine, then flashed out into the rest of me.

What the hell am I going to do? I don’t want to ignore this forever.

“I know I’ve been weird,” he mumbled against my chest.

“Yeah.”

“Sorry.”

“Why?”

“Bad memories. That’s all.”

Squeezing him closer, I rested my chin on the top of his head. “What happened?” I asked gently, but he only huddled closer. He didn’t say anything for a few minutes, and the longer the silence dragged on, the more I wanted to break something. Someone had hurt Tyler? Sweet, sunshine-in-a-jar Tyler? When?

“I’m over it,” he rasped out.

And he really seemed to be when he stepped back and gave me his usual grin. His lips were clean of gloss and sparkles. But why? I love that so much. Concern nipped at me, but I brushed it off. What could I do if he wouldn’t tell me what was wrong?

We went to our movie, shared popcorn and snarky comments along with a healthy dose of what he would have done differently with the scenery, and after that evening, our time in Pittsburgh remodeling an old Victorian top to bottom—one of the expensive projects Dad never would have given me a year ago—melted into a similar routine like we used to have. We worked all day and hung out most evenings, though I always had to be the one to knock on Tyler’s door.

The restlessness dogging me slowly began to fade until one night I was lying on Tyler’s comfortable hotel room bed.
